Mushatts No 9: One of Dublin’s
oldest serving healthcare brands.
An introduction to The Mushatt’s Brothers
The Mushatt family became an institution in Dublin's Liberties area, known for their medicinal mixtures and preparations that served the poor and working classes. Originating from Lithuania, Harry Mushatt’s father moved to Dublin in 1886. Harry’s brother, Louis, began their medical legacy by working as an apprentice at Mistear’s Medical Hall, which led to the establishment of the Mushatt chemist shop in 1922.
Louis and Harry Mushatt, despite their age difference, worked tirelessly together, often from morning until late at night, creating and dispensing up to 44 different medical preparations from their shop. They served the impoverished tenement residents, who relied on them for affordable healthcare. The brothers became known as the "fellas with the cures," providing remedies for a variety of ailments, including foot problems, skin issues, digestive troubles, and teething pains.
Their shop was always busy, particularly on Saturdays, with most customers being women. They offered various affordable solutions, often accepting small payments and reused bottles. Notably, they created successful ointments and creams for psoriasis and skin conditions. The Mushatt brothers also provided humorous anecdotes, like Harry recalling a customer skeptical of their hair tonic.
When Harry retired in 1967, it marked the end of an era, but their legacy continues through Mushatt’s No. 9 Skin Care products, honoring their commitment to the community.
